i'm so glad that it's not just me! that's my understanding too - i wonder if maybe it's also that it's an older technology, technically (? i'm not actually sure, but at least in the public understanding!), so the expectations and caveats are clearer to people. which might have led to wider acceptance of things like character.ai compared against other and scarier uses of ai.
