snowflake challenge #6: text based scavenger hunt!

we are creeping closer to the end of january but i am determined to actually make it to the end! so today we are doing a digital scavenger hunt. i would do pictures, but I'm a little leery of my privacy and I'm at work technically so composing this from my phone and image hosting from a phone is a little awkward.

In your own space, post the results of your fandom scavenger hunt.

Search in your current space, whether brick-and-mortar or digital. Post a picture or description of something that is or represents:

1. A favorite character

This is more a collection of items than one item, but I have a gradually increasing collection of hugo strange merch that makes me very happy! I currently own a glassesless gotham hugo action figure (i made him his own glasses from a plastic cable tie lol), some stickers, and a custom piece that I can't talk about because people I know irl know I have it 😂

I also have multiple commissions of Hugo selfship stuff, both gifted to me by my lovely partner and commissioned myself. it's mostly just filthy medical kink drugplay stuff but there is also a wonderful piece of me being bent over a desk and fucked. back when I did do all those commissions, I didn't have mat finish (my icon) who is my self insert surrogate basically, removed enough from my real life appearance to feel more comfortable and private and alter ego-ish. I think probably that would be in the pipelines if I decide to commission more! :)

2. Something that makes you laugh

My most recent photo in my camera roll is a picture of the plum crumble I fucked up baking last night (a child could do it lol it is a very simple recipe) because I was like "I can toss the plums in the sugar IN the baking tray can't I, and save on the dishes". of no surprise to anyone, it started smoking and burning because there was sugar, on its own, all over the base of the tray. it was actually delicious and looked good once the burnt parts had been peeled off. but i was struck that such a disaster went into such a tiny amount of dessert.

if you're wondering why we had plums in the house it's because my partner is currently obsessed with jack horner from puss in boots 2. we have a very fandomy existence and it's wonderful.

3. A bookshelf

My digital bookshelf kept on readera is a lot of random stuff lol. I keep them in these collections:

1) cookbooks (I like to clip recipes and add them to my notes app! I tend to have a higher success rate with published books Vs cooking blogs, especially as they are generally ones published in the UK which use UK measurements lol)

2) writing ref. because I started it while writing my current novel last year, but also just because im horny, it is entirely reference books on erotic hypnosis and brainwashing plus a single book about finishing drafts quicker called "2k to 10k" by rachel aaron. the latter is great, I'd recommend it!

3) self help (almost all I read while I was working in a very bad job last year and wanted to die a little :') also very much a contributor to my current novel, but inadvertently.)

4) fiction (mostly faustian pact stories, also for novel insp. there is a lot of clive barker.)

5) work reference (stuff about my professional field recommended to me by people at work. I haven't actually read anything in this collection I just hoard shit LOL)

4. A game or hobby you enjoy

I don't play on my ps4 that much but it is behind me right now so that!!!

i started playing gtav having never played it before, but had to take a hiatus because I'm so horrible at aiming and it was making me sad :(

5. Something you find comforting

my french press. I recently got back into coffee brewing thanks to the youtuber james hoffman who is an intrinsically soothing and soft spoken presence. im a few inches from buying a coffee grinder when i have some money to spare.

6. A TV show or movie you hope more people will watch

i was looking at my venture bros artbook so... the venture bros! do it!

7. A piece of clothing you love

the floral shirt I am wearing today. very difficult to do this without a photo, but it is coral pink and blue and purple and i like that it has both graphical, outlined flowers and realistically painted ones. patterned things make my brain happy.

8. A thing from an old fandom

I have lots of merch from a fandom i cannot talk about - it is intrinsically tied to my old account. i am pretty sure i might own the most merch and commissioned art to do with one of the characters, because so little was produced.

9. A thing from a new fandom

for christmas, my partner bought me a little captain spaulding pop figure (from rob zombie's firefly trilogy) 🥰 i love that sleazy fucking clown. clowns with guns are a subtype of my type.

I'm super interested in that 2k to 10k book. Do you feel like the writing advice in that has been helpful, or is it more motivational?

Also excellent taste with Vbros. I was in the middle of a rewatch that got postponed cause of other stuff, so this is a good reminder to come back to it.

I'm really curious about this old fandom of yours now. It's so special when theres so little merch out there, but you've managed to collect all of it, especially when some of it is comissioned!

2k to 10k was great! There is a little of both; there is some mindset shifting but there is also some really good practical advice in terms of planning adequately to draft and edit more quickly. Probably the biggest piece of advice I never thought about was to actually cut scenes I wasn't excited to write even if they seem key, because there would always be other ways to move the plot forward that *will* be exciting to you. I'm also following the editing workflow in the book and as someone who has never actually finished a piece of long form fiction I'm finding the edit of my current draft a lot less intimidating!

Vbros is just so good, I'm in the same position! I was ranking all the episodes on here like a year ago and then never got past season 5 😭 though I have rewatched individual favourites since. My partner and I frequently rewatch The Bellicose Proxy because it is just so funny.

Oh yes definitely!! It was super odd to have to leave it behind for anonymity's sake (fortunately the fandom is kind of dead lol, so there isn't much FOMO about actively participating in the community), but I look back on it very fondly and it's nice to have the memorabilia as a comfort 🥰 and it's given me a taste for like, finding a niche fave and slowly gathering what little they have.
